The Hipstel: The hostel and its surroundings

Want to know what can be done close to the hostel?

Shopping, dining, fashion, design and more are all just steps away from The Hipstel, in the heart of Barcelona

The Hipstel Barcelona

Visitors to Barcelona should know about some of the interesting history of the neighbourhood in which the hostel The Hipstel is housed . The Eixample neighbourhood was created back in the mid-nineteenth century (1860) by architect Ildefonso Cerda, during the massive growth of the city that seemed to have no limit. This geometric design that joins the old city of Barcelona’s Gracia neighborhoods in the east, San Andrés in the north, and Sants in the south was delicately planned for the future, ie the present day.

The hostel The Hipstel is located on Valencia street no.266 between two of the finest streets in Barcelona. One is the distinguished Rambla de Catalunya, which connects Plaza Catalunya and Avenida Diagonal, where we can find the most elegant shops in the city. The streets that cross their path are examples of places which witnessed the rapid urban expanse during the twentieth century at the height of its growth.

It runs parallel to Paseo de Gracia, the undisputed landmark of the city of Barcelona where we can find many international designer and boutique stores as well as some of the most emblematic buildings in the city. And all this just a few meters away from the hostel!

Rambla de Catalunya: The most stylish boulevard in Barcelona

The Hipstel is in a privileged location when going shopping or trying out local tapas. Once outside the hostel, turning left, we find the Rambla de Catalunya, the historic and stately boulevard which acts as a continuation of the famous Ramblas in Barcelona, but with much more style. Here you’ll find beautiful shops from local and traditional designers as well as big fashion brands, and plenty of cafés, delicious bakeries, bars and “bodeguitas” for the well deserved stop for lunch / pre lunch vermouth .

If like shopping, right next to the hostel, you’ll find the entrance to Boulevard Rosa, a unique gallery full of different stores, where you can customize a dress to your liking or fix your favorite shoes, where you can find local fashion and glasses designers, and much more. It is definitely worth taking a walk into this hidden world within the bustle of the big city.

If you look up the street to the end of Rambla de Catalunya, you can find the perfect place to surrender to the sun and enjoy our Mediterranean climate around this tree-lined promenade. If you have forgotten your sunglasses, you can go up to number 102 on Rambla de Catalunya where you’ll find Sunglass Hut, a speciality shop where you can choose from the best frames and lenses to give your eyes a rest on your walks in the sun.

As it’s always good to dig a little deeper, on Corsica Street 176, you will find Azultierra, a shop which doubles as a kind of art gallery as well as stocking lots of household appliances, home decor, furniture, textiles, lighting, crockery, glassware, accessories and even incense and works of art. Go in and enjoy its 1300 m2 of exhibition space.

Now it is time to pause, time to take a breather and have a drink, and what better a place to do this than The Bodegueta, a traditional wholesale drinks store which has now become a popular space to enjoy tapas and wine. They also have an outdoor terrace to enjoy. It’s right on the corner of Rambla Catalunya and Provence.

After the aperitif you can go down to number 81 on Rambla Catalunya and get lost in the world of Muji, a small Japanese gift store full of lovely things to bring back to friends who could not be with you on your great adventure in Barcelona.

Restaurant Toto BarcelonaToto Restaurant

Now, time to eat. For this we recommend a couple of very good options right by the hostel. One option is the Toto restaurant. With a new menu everyday, this well cared for space offers a varied range food including pizzas, pastas and risottos.

The second option is Hummus Barcelona, a vegetarian / vegan restaurant with a variety of lovely recipes for those who prefer not to eat meat. However, if you are a meat eater, you will be equally surprised by the delicacies they have to offer, you won’t regret it!

Paseo de Gracia: Modernist Barcelona right next to the hostel

Now that we know what there is to see on Rambla Catalunya, it’s time to have a look at what there is do do in this wonderful city when money is not an option. Taking a right outside the hostel, you will find Paseo de Gracia, the most distinguished avenue in Barcelona .This is where many of the most famous high end fashion brands that arouse admiration worldwide have decided to call home, such as: Prada, Gucci, Guess, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Stella McCartney, Valentino, etc.

On this avenue we can also see two of the greatest architectural attractions in the world, created by the Barcelonian genius Antoni Gaudí. The first of these is Casa Batlló, famous for it’s brilliant colors and organic forms, this emblematic work of Gaudí was built in 1906. This modernist building stands out due to its beauty and the challenging organic harmony of both the indoor and outdoor . Another prominent building is La Pedrera or as its called officially: Casa Mila. A benchmark of Modernist architecture, it it especially famous for its curved lines, modelled wooden interiors and fireplaces that look like medieval warriors. Impossible to miss!

El Nacional restaurant BarcelonaEl Nacional Restaurant

At lunchtime, drop by the newly opened dining space called El Nacional. All we will say is that this 2600 m2 space previously housed cafes, a theatre, a dye factory, a car dealership and a garage. All of this is now El Nacional. Head over and check it out, you will not believe your eyes!

If you have still not decided at which hostel stay in, or if you finding choosing where to stay in Barcelona difficult, do not hesitate, come to The Hipstel, the stylish hostel in the center of Barcelona.
